In the beginning we had no concrete purpose or aim. We began with some random jam-sessions, but without making complete and hand-tight songs for a long period of time.
Over the years these fragments became more and more structured. We felt the need to give ourselves a name. Verdunkeln was born and considered as a studio-project at that time.
We had collected enough material to record an album of that stuff. We mainly focused on the musical-part. The music was our intention to work with Verdunkeln. We even thought about making music without vocals. But we decided differently.
We used lyrics on the demo, but they did not succeed as such a central theme as the music did. The demo was recorded on a four-track tape and released.
Our requirements grew, on musical as well as on lyrical themes. The lyrics became more important. Any further lyrics were solely written by Ratatyske. Gnarl focused more on the music. The songs got more conceptual at that time. „Einblick in den Qualenfall“ was created and scored more success than we expected for telling the truth.
We never really thought about performing Verdunkeln live. We were not convinced about that idea.
Indeed, an espousal and the appendant wish for a gift persuaded us to establish a line-up for a concert… and originally for only one single gig. That at least, was our primarily intention.
Hiemos and Meilenwald completed our quartet of doom. It was a great effort to arrange the line-up. So we decided to continue (in contrast to our prior attitude), because we didn´t want to waste all the resources and strength we have invested and we recognized, that it worked out well for playing live. So we continued it.
We basically continued the way of working we did on “Einblick…”
The potential for rehearsals was really spare, due to working times and driving distances. So we spent the most resources on live preliminaries. Therefore „Weder Licht noch Schatten“ could not be released until 2012.
Ratatyske made a heavy decision and left Verdunkeln in friendship due to personal reasons.
